Lando Norris edged out team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the championship lead from Piastri by one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the points battle, trailing 36 points behind behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at corner four during the early running. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the quick descending corner before the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber P3, over half a second off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
